The mission is to identify the molecular and cellular mechanisms involved in the body’s response to artificial atmospheres due to the effects of pressure per se, gas partial pressure alone, and/or the production of secondary reaction productions such as O2-induced free radicals. Altered pressure environments are routinely encountered in hyperbaric medicine (hyperbaric oxygen therapy), underwater diving (hyperbaric gases) and space exploration (hypobaric gases). The Lab with the recruitments included students and junior faculty with research interests in molecular genetics, biochemical toxicology, pharmacology and sport sciences will maintain training excellence in systems physiology. These studies aimed to investigate the pathophysiology of oxygen toxicity, diving related stresses, and mechanisms of hypoxic response in cells, in animals and humans.
Research areas of interest are the control of breathing, metabolic disorders and enviromental stress on exercise-induced oxygen toxicity.
Clinical areas of interest is the safety of human performance in extreme environments and peri-operative quality of care of the vascular and infective surgical patients; in particular to explore the hypoxia modulation and the mechanisms of action of hyperbaric oxygen therapy.
Primary areas of education include exercise physiology and environmental medicine for Motor Sciences and Medicine Courses, supporting students as GAV coordinator and problem-based learning discussions. Recently Dr. Bosco brought in Padua University a Master Course for Physicians and a Course for technicians and nurses in Hyperbaric Medicine (http://www.unipd.it/medicina-iperbarica; http://www.unipd.it/node/5613).
