Antonio Paoli is currently Director of the Nutrition & Exercise Physiology Laboratory and Associate Professor of Fitness and Theory and Methodology of Training at the Human Movement Sciences Degree program - Department of Biomedical Sciences, University of Padova, Italy. His laboratories research interests include the interaction of exercise and diet on skeletal muscle metabolism with special interest on ketogenic diet; the molecular bases of exercise training adaptation; and the sports biomechanics. He was a consultant for several professional sports athletes and team. He published several papers about the health effects of ketogenic diets (Paoli A. et al. Nutr J. 2011 Oct 12;10:112; Paoli A Int J Environ Res Public Health. 2014, 11(2), 2092-2107; Paoli A. et al. Eur J Clin Nutr.2013 Aug;67(8):789-96). In 2011 he demonstrated that a short period of ketogenic diet does not affect strength performance in elite artistic gymnasts (Paoli A. et al. Int Soc Sports Nutr. 2012 Jul 26;9(1):34). In 2012 Dr. Paoli demonstrated that a brief but intense bout of resistance training can influence basal metabolism up to 24 hours after the training session (Paoli A. et al. J Transl Med. 2012 Nov 24;10:237). This result suggests important health benefits in terms of weight control and metabolic improvement (Paoli A. et al. Lipids Health Dis. 2013 Sep 3;12:131). In recent years he investigate also skeletal muscle characteristics and its adaptation to training (Paoli A. et al. Biomed Res Int. 2013;2013:249398). Sports biomechanics is one of the Dr.Paoli's research lines: in 2009 he described the influence of stance width during squat, one of the most popular strength exercises (Paoli A. et al. J Strength Cond Res. 2009 Jan;23(1):246-50).
